DIY Wedding Trends: Personalize Your Wedding with a Sports Theme

One of the most fun DIY wedding trends in recent years is personalization from the first announcement through the thank you notes.  More couples are choosing familiar over formal to personalize their nuptials and are creating unique events they will remember fondly forever.  Whatever you are into, rest assured you can easily incorporate your personal interests into a wonderful wedding event for you and your guests.

The love of a sport is often a shared activity for couples and for some, a sports theme wedding can be whimsical or elegant.  The couple may play a particular sport or they may love a professional sports team.  We have all seen proposals on the Jumbotron but what if a couple takes it further, much further?

Nothing Says Fan Like Team Colors

For starters, an easy way to create a professional sports theme is to use team colors.  I can envision New Orleans Saints fans utilizing an elegant color palette of black and gold.  Less formal couples may even go so far as to wear official team gear.

If you can’t see your team’s colors as the predominate wedding color palette, you can always opt to use them as accents.  If the Green Bay Packers green and gold is too intense for your taste and sensibilities, you can tone it all down very easily.  Perhaps the groomsmen can wear Packer green ties.  Or you can have custom made bead necklaces for your bridesmaids reflect the team colors against more neutral gowns.

Make sure you search for wedding accessories, too.  You actually can buy cake toppers and wedding garters designed with your team’s logo and colors.

Let Location Set a Tone

Can you possibly get a tighter themed wedding than to hold it at a sports venue?  Some professional teams may even allow the event at one of their games.  Vows can be exchanged during an ice hockey game at intermission.  The newly married couple can then ride the Zamboni in lieu of a first dance.

It may not be possible to hold your wedding at a professional venue but there is no reason you can’t grab your bridesmaids and cheer on your favorite team as a bachelorette party.  Sounds like a lot more fun than the clichéd strip club, doesn’t it?

Another location possibility is a local field or stadium.  You might dream of being married on the pitcher’s mound at Dodger Stadium, but the local Little League field may do just as well.  You can always hold the reception at a Dodger game and serve those great stadium hot dogs.  Price wise, a baseball game may not be any pricier than a banquet hall and has the potential to be a whole lot more fun.

Can You Do Me a Favor?

You can go crazy with the favors.  Some couples opt for keepsake favors with their date and name engraved.  I find these are more often than not, dust collectors.  I prefer items your guest can actually use.  Assuming your guests are also fans of your team, you can go with something as simple as salt and pepper shakers.  I wouldn’t rule out foam fingers either.

Keep in mind if you buy official team gear as favors, this can get quite expensive.  If you are crafty, you can buy some felt and fashion pennants with your team and your wedding details.  I’m a fan of Jelly Belly jelly beans in a pretty wine glass.  You could wrap the glass with tulle and ribbon in your team colors.

There is no end to the possibilities DIY wedding trends present.  Sports themes are simply one of many you can choose to make your special day truly special for you and your family and friends.
