{GB} How the Right Accessories Can Make or Break Your Wedding Dress

Most women feel that the dress is the most important part of their wedding day.  To a large extent, this is true.  Choosing the right dress can make a women look and feel like the radiant bride she is (and deliver the perfect pictures she’ll gaze at for the rest of her life).  In the meantime, everything else is meant to accent the centerpiece (as in, the bride).  From flowers to bridesmaids to the tux the groom wears, every element should make the bride the center of attention; and the jewelry she wears is no exception.  You may not think that choosing diamonds, pearls, or colored gemstones will make a real difference once you find the perfect dress, but the wrong accessories will stick out like a sore thumb.  Here are a few ways to make sure that the jewelry you choose doesn’t end up wearing you instead of the other way around.

For starters, you’ll want to choose pieces that fit your stature.  Ladies, be honest here.  Small, waifish women can get away with tiny, delicate jewelry, but those of us who are more voluptuous need larger jewelry to match our size.  In the long run, there’s nothing to be gained by choosing accoutrements that simply aren’t right for you.  You wouldn’t pick a pair of shoes that was two sizes too small, would you?  Keep the same idea in mind when it comes to selecting your jewelry and you’ll see the perfect balance when it comes time for photos.

You’ll also want to look for the right jewelry.  Diamonds and pearls (exclusive or mixed together) are traditional, largely because they are colorless and white to provide sparkle and accent without overpowering your look or standing out too much.  Many brides are now opting to go with colored stones that match their wedding colors, but this is often a mistake.  Color can date your wedding photos just as easily as the wrong style of dress (never go with current trends!).  So if you want to remain timeless, stick to diamonds and/or pearls.  Twenty years down the road you won’t have to hide your wedding photos in a cabinet.

Finally, you should embrace the mentality of “less is more”.  It can be tempting to pile on earrings, a necklace, bracelets, rings, and more, but remember that YOU are supposed to be the center of attention, not your eye-catching and ostentatious jewelry collection.  So try limiting yourself to the pieces that best match your dress.  If you have a low neckline, consider a necklace but wear studs instead of drop earrings.  If your bodice is strapless, you can probably get away with a chunkier bracelet than if you have some sort of sleeve.  And think about going ring-free on this particular day (except, of course, for the engagement and wedding bands).  You want all the attention to be on one finger and one finger only!  If you think that perhaps you have too much jewelry on, try a favorite trick of fashionistas throughout the ages and remove one piece before you hit the aisle.  After all, everyone is there to look at your brilliant beauty.  Blinding them with your bling is a definite no-no.
